The iPhone is on its way to becoming a premier media device. We all know that it plays music very well, and that you can watch movies that you buy or rent from the iTunes store. But sooner than later, streaming live television will be hitting iPhones everywhere.

The media streaming technology Sling will soon be coming to Macs and iPhones everywhere. This week at Macworld 2009, Sling Media announced both the SlingPlayer for Mac HD and the Sling Media’s SlingPlayer for iPhone. The iPhone app will allow you to stream media directly from your Slingbox through Wi-Fi, 3G or even an Edge connection.

The application should be available soon; it is to be released in the first quarter of this year. For more information and a video of the iPhone player in action, visit the Sling homepage.

Rock Skipper (Jan 2009 | Credit: www.threeminds.organic.com)

As long as you're careful not to throw your iPhone across the room, this .99 game is also a fun demo of the iPhone's accelerometer, which is used to create the physics of throwing a rock for the maximum number of water skips. The users who are giving this a top rating must be more forgiving than me - I wish the 3d hand and animation looked a little better, along with the hard to read typography. Still, pretty cool for the price of a cookie!

Apple has just released iPhone firmware 2.2.1 (5H11A) through iTunes.

The firmware update contains minor bug fixes and improvements such as improved stability of Safari and a fix for an issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll.

The release notes lists minor bug fixes and improvements in iPhone firmware 2.2.1. They are mentioned below:

  • Improved general stability of Safari
  • Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll

Its good to see that it includes improved stability of Safari, so hopefully it should reduce the iPhone Safari crashes further though iPhone firmware 2.2 had reduced it to some extent.

If you have jailbroken and/or unlocked your iPhone then updating your iPhone with the latest firmware is not recommended at least until the iPhone Dev Team have not released the latest version of PwnageTool, QuickPwn which can jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.2.1 and yellowsn0w to unlock iPhone 3G.
