XM SkyDock for iPhone (August 2009 Credit: www.topiphonenews.com)
iPhone Software Update Roundup

In areas like mine where you have only pop and country stations, you need satellite radio. Assuming those aren’t your favorite genres of music. Sirius XM radio has a new kit for iPhone and iPod users that makes the device a satellite radio controller.

The SkyDock reminds me a lot of something from Belkin and is designed to hold your iPhone or iPod touch and charge it while you use the device to control your satellite radio. The app automatically adjusts to landscape or portrait mode. The music is sent through the cars electrical system to the radio with PowerConnect mode or can be used with a line out.

CNET says that the beta app it tested appeared to work very smoothly.

The SkyDock will sell for $120 this fall and requires a radio subscription.

Head to Head Comparison of the 5 Most Popular iPhone Turn by Turn Navigation Apps (Credit: www.ismashphone.com)

Below are brief overviews of each individual application with screenshots and iTunes links. Please let us know in the comments which app you bought and how it has been working for you.

TomTom (B+)

TomTom (B+) TomTom (B+) TomTom (B+) TomTom is the leader of the GPS world, and there's a reason. They make a good product, and that didn't change for their iPhone app. The app works great. Just like their portable devices, the map itself looks ugly...with a thick red line over a beige background, and occasionally some jagged edges. But quite frankly, it's not there to be modeled, it's there to guide you and give you functionality. That it does.

Navigon MobileNavigator (B)

Navigon MobileNavigator (B) Navigon MobileNavigator (B) Navigon MobileNavigator (B) The Navigon Mobile Navigator may be the best option in the App Store right now due to the fact that it has been dropped to $70 until August 31st, when it will go up to $100. The Navigon app will guide you wonderfully, but there are a few things missing. For one, you can't see the route summary. There's also no traffic feature...but that shouldn't stop you from buying the app.

AT&T Navigator (C+)

AT&T Navigator (C+) AT&T Navigator (C+) AT&T Navigator (C+) The AT&T Navigator application is an excellent app except for 3 things. It requires an internet connection. Maps are always downloaded fresh from servers. It takes a while to load and reload. There is no landscape mode, which is silly for a navigational app. Lastly, the $10/month pricing will lead to an extremely expensive application. But the app offers a vivid and attractive map, and other great features: traffic and search for lowest-priced gas.

CoPilot Live North America (C)

CoPilot Live North America CoPilot Live North America CoPilot Live North America CoPilot Live North America is the cheapest of the 5 applications, costing only $35. However, you pay for what you get. Many expected features are missing, and some of the present ones don't work. The POI search, for instance, needs a lot of work. Also, users have been complaining about app stability. On the plus side, if you just need an app to guide you from point A to point B, CoPilot will do the job. And the map looks great.

Dymo LabelWriter App for iPhone Launches (Credit: www.topiphonenews.com)

Dymo LabelWriter App

Back when I had a real job, I often had to print address labels from this rickety Dymo label printer for mailing lists. The biggest pain was trying to get the labels to print the way I needed them too.

Dymo has announced a new app for the iPhone that makes printing one label or a complete mailing list easier. The app is called Print n Share and works with the Dymo 400 and 450 label printers.

Other than letting you print labels directly from your iPhone, the app also lets users manage lists or databases. You can also use the app to cross reference emails and contact lists and you can design custom labels from the iPhone. The little app is available now for $6.99.
